Ground Transportation 101: Pet Options When Flying Isn't An Option
When breed restrictions, snub-nosed embargoes, or summer heat ban your pet from cargo holds, ground transport is the safest path. Here's how it works.
When ground beats air
Major airlines impose a long list of restrictions on live-animal cargo: snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds like pugs, bulldogs, and Persian cats are banned outright by most carriers. Summer heat embargoes ground pet cargo at temperatures above 85°F. Breed-specific bans cover several “bully” breeds.
For these pets — and for owners who simply prefer it — professional ground transport is the safer, calmer alternative.
What good ground transport looks like
A door-to-door service with climate-controlled vehicles, GPS tracking, and a driver trained specifically in animal care. Pets ride in secured, properly-sized crates inside the cabin (not in a trailer), with regular potty stops, food, and water.
Booking ahead
Plan 4–6 weeks ahead for transcontinental moves. Health certificates, vaccinations, and microchip records are still required.
